What Is Structural Medicine?

Distinctive to the field of structural integration, Structural Medicine directly addresses specific pathologies, painful complaints, and movement dysfunctions. It bridges well-established and proven evaluation tools found in mainstream medicine (strength, range-of-motion, postural assessment) with the latest scientific developments in alternative treatment therapies (manual therapy, myofascial release, movement education, neuromuscular re-education, energetics, and dialogue).

Every Structural Medicine session is tailored specifically and meaningfully to the client to meet them right where they are.

MYOFASCIAL LENGTH TESTING

Unique to Structural Medicine is a sophisticated diagnostic procedure, myofascial length testing (MFLT). MFLT is essential for treatment of complex inter-related traumas and structural imbalances. The objective findings empower the practitioner to formulate a customized plan for treatment of an individuals needs; provides a language to communicate intelligently and objectively with other medical professionals; provides physical measurements, pre and post treatment, to monitor or modify the treatment program, as well as enhance progress. Overall, MFLT is a powerful tool that elevates the practice of Structural Medicine substantially and drastically improves the outcomes for clients.

EXTENSIVE EVALUATION

Structural Medicine involves extensive evaluation of postural alignment and movement, in order to balance the myofascial tone, length, and strength across all the major joints of the body. Through myofascial reorganization, the Structural Medicine process moves the body closer to a more efficient organization and function in gravity.

BODY AWARENESS AND PAIN MANAGEMENT: AN INTEGRATED PROCESS

Through verbal dialogue and movement re-education, Structural Medicine helps uncover attitudes and unconscious beliefs that contribute to or limit postural integrity and efficient movement dynamics. By means of the Structural Medicine integrative process, a new-found empowered awareness develops to re-align posture, movement patterns, and a sense of self more aligned to the individuals current needs.

Common Questions

  • How is Structural Medicine different from a massage?

    • Structural Medicine training is over 2,500 hours of hands-on work beginning on Day 1; whereas the average massage school is only 560 hours in the U.S.
    • Structural Medicine works to physically and measureably change a client’s structure through their myofascial tissue.
    • Myofascial Length Testing is unique to Structural Medicine and allows for more targeted treatments. Structural Medicine also aims to treat specific ailments with a breadth of knowledge that includes Rolfing, Hellerwork, Anatomy Trains, Aston Patterning, Feldenkrais and more.
  • Will it hurt?

    • The most effective treatments are on the edge of intensity where the client can remain relaxed and breathing calmly while I treat the myofascial tissue at the desired depth. This can often feel very intense but should never bruise the client.
    • Clients can and should always ask me to reduce pressure if they find themselves tensing against my pressure or holding their breath.
  • Do you take insurance?

    • Most insurance companies reimburse some percentage of massage visits. I do not work within any particular insurance network nor do I bill directly with any insurance.
    • If your insurance plan reimburses for massage, then you can submit a superbill and file for reimbursement.
    • Log in to your Jane App account that you use for booking to find Superbills (receipts).
    • It is your responsibility to submit the superbill to your insurance company.
    • There is no guarantee that your session will be covered or what percentage will be covered.
    • *Please call your insurance company to see what will be covered by your plan.*
    • Full payment is due at the end of each session regardless of whether  you plan to file for reimbursement with your insurance company.
  • What is your cancellation policy?

    • More than 48 hours notice: no charge
    • Less than 48 hours full amount of the session is charged
    • I understand that emergencies come up and I will consider them on a case-by-case basis with you.
  • How many sessions will I need to feel the difference?

    • This work is often transformative providing changes that you can feel after the 1st session. However, lasting changes to a client’s structure does take time and repetition.
  • How often should I have a session?

    • We will develop a treatment plan that takes into account your structural needs and goals, schedule, and budget during your initial visit.
